Learn About Siberian Cats: A Breed Like No Other
Strong, intelligent, affectionate, and renowned for their remarkable personalities, the Siberian is one of the world's most captivating cat breeds. After more than twenty years of living with and breeding Siberians, we'd like to share why we believe they make such extraordinary companion

All About the Siberian Cat
The Siberian is one of the world's oldest natural cat breeds, developing over centuries in the forests of Russia, where harsh winters and a demanding climate helped shape a cat of remarkable strength, endurance, and beauty.
A well-bred Siberian is an impressive cat. Strong, sturdy, and beautifully balanced, the breed combines power with elegance in a way few other cats can match. They are heavily boned, muscular, and athletic, yet every part of the cat should appear harmonious and in proportion.
One of the Siberian's most distinctive features is its magnificent head. Large with softly rounded contours, expressive round eyes, and framed by a luxurious ruff, it has a gentle, intelligent expression that is instantly recognizable.
Combined with its substantial body and rich triple coat, the Siberian has an appearance that is both striking and unmistakable.
Despite their impressive size and strength, Siberians are remarkably agile. They are natural athletes, capable of astonishing leaps and graceful movement, yet they are equally content curled up beside the people they love.
While the Siberian began as a natural breed, the Siberians seen today reflect both their hardy origins and the careful work of breeders who have preserved and refined the breed over time.
A well-bred Siberian should never look extreme, but it should have the strength, substance, rounded contours, expressive eyes, and luxurious coat that make the breed so distinctive.
Of course, appearance is only part of the story. Ask almost anyone who has shared their home with a Siberian, and they will tell you that what makes this breed truly unforgettable has very little to do with how it looks.

What Makes a Siberian Cat So Special?

For many people, the Siberian's magnificent appearance is what first captures their attention. But ask anyone who has lived with one, and they will almost certainly tell you that it is the breed's personality that truly steals your heart.
Siberians are exceptionally intelligent cats. They are curious about everything happening around them and genuinely enjoy being involved in family life.
Rather than simply sharing your home, a Siberian wants to be part of it. Whether you are reading, cooking, gardening, or working at your computer, chances are your Siberian will decide that's exactly where it belongs too.
One of the qualities we admire most is their remarkable balance of confidence and gentleness. They are playful without being hyperactive, affectionate without being demanding, and independent enough to entertain themselves while still forming deep bonds with the people they love.
Over the years, we have watched countless Siberian kittens grow into devoted family companions. Time and again, new owners tell us that they had expected a beautiful cat—but what they hadn't expected was such an engaging personality.
It is often the Siberian's intelligence, loyalty, and sense of humour that leave the greatest impression.
Siberians generally adapt well to busy family life. They are usually excellent with respectful children, often accept dogs as members of the family, and are known for greeting visitors with curiosity rather than fear. 'Every cat is an individual, but the breed's stable, outgoing temperament is one of the reasons it has earned such a devoted following around the world.
After more than twenty years of living with and breeding Siberians, we can honestly say that while their beauty first attracted us to the breed, it is their personalities that continue to inspire us every single day. That, more than anything else, is what makes the Siberian so special.

The Siberian Cat and Allergies
One of the reasons the Siberian has become so well known around the world is its reputation as a more allergy-friendly breed. For many families, this is the reason they first begin researching Siberians.
Although no cat can honestly be described as completely allergy-free, many people with cat allergies find they can successfully live with a Siberian. Research suggests that many Siberians produce lower levels of the Fel d 1 protein, the primary allergen responsible for most cat allergies. However, every cat is an individual, and every person's allergic response is different.
For more than twenty years, we have worked with families affected by cat allergies and understand both the excitement and the uncertainty they often feel.
Our goal has always been to provide honest information and realistic expectations so that each family can make an informed decision.
Because this is such an important topic, we have created a dedicated Allergies page where we explain the science behind the Siberian's reputation, discuss what current research tells us, and describe our own allergy testing program in detail.
If allergies are one of the reasons you are considering a Siberian, we encourage you to read that page before making your decision.

Living with a Siberian
Living with a Siberian is like having a curious, intelligent companion who believes that every family activity deserves careful supervision.
Many Siberians enthusiastically "help" with everyday household chores. They make sure freshly made beds are properly fluffed, keep a close eye on your computer mouse, prevent important papers from escaping the printer, and often develop an unexpected fascination with mopping floors. Vacuum cleaners are usually tolerated, but a damp mop broom can become the center of attention!
Of course, no discussion of Siberian "household help" would be complete without mentioning the laundry basket.
Whether it contains freshly washed clothes or laundry waiting to be done, many Siberians seem convinced that it requires constant supervision. The most efficient way to provide that, of course, is to sprawl comfortably across the top of everything inside!
Their intelligence is matched by an impressive—if sometimes highly selective—sense of hearing. Many owners are amazed that a Siberian can hear the sound of a treat container or a can being opened from another floor of the house.
Yet that same remarkable hearing doesn't always guarantee they'll come when they're called! Like many intelligent cats, Siberians sometimes decide that answering is entirely optional.
They are quick learners and soon understand the little routines that become part of family life. A gentle pat on the sofa often means it's time for cuddles and ear scratches, while some become surprisingly skilled at recognizing the sight of the nail clippers and quietly disappearing until the coast is clear.
While every Siberian has its own unique personality, these little quirks are part of the charm that owners grow to love. They don't simply share your home—they become active participants in everyday life, bringing companionship, laughter, and the occasional bit of "helpful" supervision to almost everything you do.

The Coat
The Siberian's magnificent triple coat is one of the breed's defining characteristics.
Beautiful as it is, the coat was never developed simply for appearance. It evolved to protect the cat from the harsh climate of its native Russia, providing warmth in winter while remaining surprisingly practical throughout the changing seasons.
The ancestors of today's Siberians were the naturally occurring cats of Russia. Because the breed developed over centuries from a broad population rather than from a handful of foundation cats, there is considerable variation in coat colour, coat texture, and coat length. This diversity is one of the characteristics that makes the Siberian such a fascinating breed.
That variation also means that grooming needs differ from cat to cat. Some Siberians have coats that rarely mat and require very little maintenance.
During the seasonal coat change, the loose fur simply releases with minimal effort. Others have denser, more abundant coats that benefit from a thorough weekly combing to keep them looking their best.
Cats with heavier coats may also occasionally need a little trimming around the rear to help keep them clean.
No two Siberians are exactly alike. In our experience, the time of year a kitten is born also influences how its coat develops. While young Siberians are beautiful, we don't believe you truly see the coat's full potential until the cat has experienced at least two winter seasons. Watching that transformation is one of the great pleasures of owning this remarkable breed.
One recommendation we make to every new owner concerns grooming tools. Many people automatically reach for a brush, but in our experience a good brush often doesn't penetrate the Siberian's dense triple coat and, in some cases, can actually contribute to tangles.
We have found that a quality stainless steel comb is a much better investment. Choose one with teeth at one end and a sturdy handle on the other.
A good comb reaches through the coat to the skin, removes loose undercoat more effectively, and helps keep the coat in excellent condition.
One final observation from our years with Siberians: many of them seem to be wonderfully vain.
Grooming sessions are often something they genuinely enjoy, especially when accompanied by a gentle voice and a little admiration. Tell them how handsome or beautiful they are, how clever they've been, and what a magnificent coat they have, and many Siberians seem quite convinced you are finally giving them the recognition they deserve!
It is just one more of the many endearing characteristics that make living with this remarkable breed such a pleasure.
Whatever the coat type, regular grooming is not only good for the coat—it is also an excellent opportunity to check your cat's ears, teeth, claws, and overall condition while spending enjoyable one-on-one time together.

Health and Longevity
One of the reasons we believe the Siberian remains such a healthy breed is its relatively recent development as a pedigreed cat.
Unlike some breeds that have undergone many generations of intensive selection for very specific physical characteristics, the Siberian still benefits from a comparatively broad genetic foundation.
Even today, it is not uncommon to find championship Siberians whose pedigrees trace back only a few generations to the naturally occurring cats of Russia. We believe this close connection to the breed's natural origins has helped preserve the strength, soundness, and overall health for which the Siberian is known.
Every breeding decision has the potential to influence future generations. For that reason, health has always been the first priority in our breeding program, ahead of colour, appearance, or any other single characteristic.
With thoughtful breeding, good nutrition, eight control, regular veterinary care, and a safe indoor lifestyle, Siberians often enjoy long, active lives.
While every cat is an individual, it is not unusual for a Siberian to live well into its teens, and some continue to thrive for even longer.
Good health is a partnership between breeder and owner. Responsible breeding provides the best possible start, while loving care, proper nutrition, regular veterinary care, and a stimulating home environment help each cat reach its full potential and enjoy many happy years as a cherished member of the family.

Why We Chose the Siberian
People often ask us why, after more than twenty years, we remain so passionate about the Siberian.
The answer is surprisingly simple.
No other breed has ever offered us such a remarkable combination of beauty, intelligence, health, affection, and personality. They are magnificent to look at, but it is their gentle nature, and unwavering devotion to their families that leave the greatest impression.
Over the years we have watched hundreds of Siberian kittens grow into cherished companions, bringing laughter, comfort, and friendship to families across Canada.
Many of those families return years later for another Siberian, telling us they simply cannot imagine life without one. To us, that says more about the breed than any show title or championship ever could.
The Siberian is not simply a beautiful cat. It is an engaging companion, an intelligent member of the family, and for many people, a once-in-a-lifetime discovery that changes the way they think about cats.
We feel incredibly fortunate that our lives have been shaped by this extraordinary breed, and we hope that after learning more about the Siberian, you'll understand why we believe it truly is one of the world's most remarkable cats.
